The Early Years

In 1951, Franklin County voted overwhelmingly to build a bridge to St. George Island, setting the stage for the SGIFBB's development. See an excerpt from the original 1952 survey with the harbor's inclusion in the development plan. Ferry boats, including the Spica and Sirius, facilitated transportation to and from the mainland.

Transition

As ferry boat service declined, the SGIFBB transformed into a hub for commercial seafood harvesting and recreational use. A 1969 aerial photo showcases the bustling basin with dockage on three sides, a boat ramp, and a wide-open access channel. The harbor's deep-water access became essential for vessels of various types during storms.

The image shows over 30 vessels moored in the basin during the off-season in a 1984 aerial photo. The business district flourished, featuring numerous retail stores and restaurants along Bayshore and Pine streets.

Challenges: Hurricane Dennis

Hurricane Dennis in 2005 brought significant challenges to the SGIFBB. The island experienced flooding, and vast amounts of sand were displaced. The basin's access channel was nearly filled, impacting its functionality. A 2007 aerial photo captures the aftermath, showcasing the considerable deposits of sand.

Decline and Disrepair

Post-Hurricane Years

Following the adverse impact of Hurricane Dennis, the St. George Island Ferry Boat Basin experienced a decline in continuous use, leading to economic challenges for the commercial district. The once-thriving harbor fell into disrepair, affecting its role in supporting economic growth and opportunities on St. George Island. As we reflect on the 64-year history of the St. George Island Ferry Boat Basin, from its inception to the present day, it is evident that this historical harbor has played a vital role in the island's development. Despite facing challenges, including the impact of Hurricane Dennis, the SGIFBB remains an integral part of St. George Island's past, present, and potential future.
